Autumn/Winter 2018 Special Talks

Is the Bible a book of rules or gifts?
Wednesday 3rd October

We might be familiar with phrases that begin “Thou shalt not…” from the Bible’s Old Testament. These phrases often lead to a view that the Bible is a book of rules and laws, that seem to be simply designed to constrict our enjoyment of life. Is this a fair understanding? We will take a look at whether there is more to these rules and whether they apply to us in the 21st Century. We will also look at what the New Testament says on this topic. Does the Bible give you rules or gifts?

The Bible and human rights
Wednesday 7th November

History is littered with abuses of human rights. Throughout history, the rich and powerful have used opportunities to exploit people who are less fortunate or less powerful than themselves. Is our society really better than it was 100 or 200 years ago? Or are new forms of exploitation and inequality taking the place of the old ones? This Bible presentation will explore the issues from the Divine perspective. What does God think about human society and what does He plan to do to put things right?

Can the world continue like this?
Wednesday 5th December

Climate change, trade wars and real wars, intolerance and selfishness all seem to point to an uncertain future for the world. World leaders have little success in addressing the mounting global challenges of pollution, poverty and inequality. What then is the future for the planet? This talk will examine what the Bible records about the future for the world and all humanity.
